The African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is a leading, Africa-based global conservation organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and their habitats as essential components of a modern and prosperous Africa. For over 60 years, AWF has developed innovative strategies to ensure that wildlife, wildlands, and people can thrive in harmony.
AWF takes a comprehensive approach focused on three main areas: "Leading for Wildlife," "Living with Wildlife," and "Caring for Wildlife." These initiatives aim to strengthen leadership in conservation, build resilient ecosystems and communities, and improve wildlife management. A particular focus is on combating wildlife trafficking and applying conservation science to promote biodiversity preservation.
The mission of AWF is to promote an African-led conservation movement that provides solutions benefiting both people and nature. The organization is committed to ensuring that conservation decisions are made based on the best available science and data. AWF believes in the power of African leadership and works closely with local communities and governments to ensure that conservation in Africa is led by Africans.
AWF has set ambitious sustainability goals embedded in the "Strategic Vision 2020-2030." This vision aims to overcome the false choice between nature and development and promote sustainable solutions that benefit both. The organization is engaged in numerous initiatives, including promoting agroforestry, supporting women and youth through alternative livelihoods, and strengthening community resilience to the challenges of climate change.
Current initiatives of AWF include the launch of the Charles R. Wall Conservation Leadership Management Program, aimed at fostering the next generation of African conservation leaders. Additionally, AWF, in collaboration with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, has established the first protected areas in Uganda and launched the global Benjamin Mkapa African Wildlife Photography Awards to raise awareness of the continent's biodiversity.
