The Aktion Sonnenschein Foundation is an established Montessori institution in Munich that has been helping children, adolescents and young adults with and without special educational needs for over 50 years.[5][7] Founded by Professor Theodor Hellbrügge, it embodies the principles of Maria Montessori and promotes inclusion as a central idea: genuine togetherness that not only accepts diversity, but actively uses it.[7]
Today Aktion Sonnenschein operates a Montessori Center of Diversity for over 600 children and young people with three main areas:[5]
This structure creates seamless transitions from daycare to vocational preparation and emphasizes independent learning in mixed groups.[9]
The main mission is: To comprehensively serve children with disabilities and those at risk of disability, to develop their potential and to promote social inclusion.[7] Core values are equality of all people - regardless of origin, age, religion, disability or sexual identity. The institution welcomes diverse applications and prioritizes people with severe disabilities with the same qualifications.[6] Montessori principles such as freedom within clear boundaries, respect for individual pace and practical learning form the foundation.[1][5]
Aktion Sonnenschein pursues sustainability by multiplying inclusive ideas: Over the decades, it has carried inclusion into Munich society, supported by donations and sponsors.[2][7] Initiatives such as press reports (e.g. "Talking is Silver, Doing is Gold!" 2025 or "I'm really learning for life here!" 2024) highlight successes and raise awareness of inclusion.[8] The foundation is financed on a non-profit basis in order to secure long-term stable structures for over 600 children - a contribution to a diverse, tolerant society.[5][7]
With its unique combination of pedagogy, inclusion and vocational orientation, Aktion Sonnenschein is a pioneer for an education that equally involves all children and prepares them for life. Interested families will find open doors for registrations and events.[1][10]
