The Deutsche Alzheimer Gesellschaft e. V. Selbsthilfe Demenz is a non-profit self-help organization that has been committed to the concerns of people with dementia and their relatives for over 35 years. Those affected, their families, as well as volunteers and full-time employees from various professional groups are equally at the center of their actions. As an independent and neutral organization, it finances its work through membership fees, donations and funding and cooperates nationwide with numerous local Alzheimer's societies as well as internationally with Alzheimer Europe and Alzheimer’s Disease International[1][4][7].
The main mission of the Deutsche Alzheimer Gesellschaft is to improve the living situation of people with dementia by providing comprehensive advice, information and support. It promotes better diagnostics, treatment, care and support so that those affected and their relatives are accepted in society and feel comfortable. In addition to individual help for self-help, the society has an important protective and lobbying function and consistently represents the interests of dementia patients at the political level, for example as part of the steering group of the National Dementia Strategy[1][5].
In addition to personal advice, including at the Alzheimer telephone with thousands of inquiries every year, the core services include the development and certification of further training courses for specialists as well as the promotion of concepts for better care and relief services for relatives. Public relations and education are intended to increase understanding and acceptance of dementia in society. The experiential knowledge of those affected as well as the professional expertise of various professional groups are used and combined equally[1][4][6].
The Deutsche Alzheimer Stiftung, a legally independent non-profit foundation, supports the society financially and promotes aid for people with Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases as well as their families and care staff. This ensures the statutory and non-profit tasks in the long term[2].
The organization's sustainability goals include the continuous expansion of user-oriented services, ensuring a high quality standard in advice and further training, and promoting an inclusive social approach to the disease. The goal is to enable people with dementia to participate fully, as also provided for in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In addition, the society is politically and socially committed to better framework conditions in care, research and care in order to address the challenges of the increasing number of dementia patients in society[1][4][5].
Overall, the Deutsche Alzheimer Gesellschaft is a reliable point of contact that strengthens those affected, relieves them and promotes their rights, while meeting the growing challenge of dementia with expertise, advocacy and innovative projects. Their commitment makes a significant contribution to placing dementia as a social issue at the center of science, politics and the public[1][5][6].
