The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland e. V. (ASB) is a traditional yet modern aid and welfare organization that has been based on humanitarian and democratic principles since its founding in 1888. As a politically and confessionally independent association, the ASB is supported by over 1.5 million members and is divided into 16 state associations as well as around 250 regional and local branches. With more than 50,000 full-time and over 20,000 volunteer employees, the ASB is one of the largest aid organizations in Germany.
The ASB offers a wide range of services, ranging from elderly care and childcare to emergency services and disaster relief, as well as international aid. Special offerings include the emergency call system, which provides quick help at the push of a button, and the wish car, which fulfills a last wish for seriously ill people. The ASB is also committed to first aid training and offers courses on crisis preparedness to strengthen the resilience of the population.
The mission of the ASB is to help people in need, regardless of their political, ethnic, national, or religious affiliation. The ASB advocates for a democratic society and promotes humanitarian values such as freedom, dignity, tolerance, and justice. These values are firmly anchored in the ASB's statutes and guide the organization's work both in Germany and abroad.
The ASB pursues a consistent sustainability strategy with the goal of being greenhouse gas neutral by the end of 2035. As part of the project "Climate Protection – Here and Now," the ASB is working to measure the CO₂ footprint of its facilities and develop targeted climate protection measures. Initial successes have already been achieved in the areas of catering and energy, with measures for waste reduction and more climate-friendly meal planning being implemented.
Since the 1980s, international aid has been an essential part of ASB activities. The ASB is active in over 30 countries, providing emergency aid, rehabilitation, and long-term development projects. The focus is on the inclusion of vulnerable groups, self-help assistance, and the sustainable fight against poverty. These international missions aim to improve living conditions in the affected regions in the long term and prepare people for future crises.
The ASB remains true to its tradition of addressing societal challenges and developing innovative solutions to meet the needs of people. With a clear focus on social responsibility and sustainability, the ASB actively shapes the future.
