The Baugenossenschaft des Eisenbahnpersonals (BdE) Nürnberg und Umgebung is a cooperative housing organization with over 115 years of tradition in providing affordable and quality housing[1]. Since its founding on August 4, 1907, the BdE has set itself the goal of providing its members with secure, good and socially responsible housing[3].
The statutory mission of the cooperative is succinctly defined: "The purpose of the cooperative is primarily the good, secure and socially responsible housing of our members."[3] This guiding principle is reflected in all business activities. The BdE was originally founded to provide employees of the Nürnberg central shunting yard built in 1903 – especially those employed in shift work – with affordable housing near their workplaces[3].
The BdE has seven residential complexes in the Nürnberg urban area, which are lovingly maintained and managed[1]. The company offers a wide range of services for its tenants, including:
The company is characterized by fast and reliable problem solving for questions and problems relating to cooperative apartments[1].
The BdE shows a strong commitment in the area of monument protection and renovation. Particularly noteworthy is the exemplary renovation of the historic "Oberbeamtenhaus" in Bauernfeindstraße, for which the cooperative received a monument award from the district of Mittelfranken in 2025[8]. This demonstrates the company's commitment to preserving cultural heritage while modernizing living space.
In addition, the BdE continuously invests in new construction and modernization. A current new construction project with 16 apartments has been completed and handed over to tenants at the beginning of the year[8].
The company demonstrates social responsibility through remarkable decisions: Despite legal regulations that no longer allowed broadband costs to be passed on as operating costs from 2024, the BdE decided to maintain TV and radio services for its tenants free of charge[8]. This decision underscores the cooperative's commitment to supporting its tenants.
The BdE is managed by a three-member board and has a managing director[4][5]. The company is registered in the cooperative register at the Amtsgericht Nürnberg under registration number 4 and is supervised by the Verband bayerischer Wohnungsunternehmen [4].
The Baugenossenschaft des Eisenbahnpersonals Nürnberg und Umgebung is an established, member-oriented housing company characterized by tradition, reliability and social commitment. With its focus on affordable housing, high-quality management and sustainable management, the BdE remains an important player in the Nürnberg housing landscape.
