The Residenztheater, colloquially known as "das Resi", is the main venue of the Bayerischen Staatsschauspiels and one of the most traditional and largest spoken theaters in the German-speaking area.[2][3][6] Founded in 1753 as the Kurfürstliches Hof- und Nationaltheater, it has cultivated a rich theatrical tradition for over 270 years and attracts up to 230,000 spectators per season.[1][2]
With a permanent ensemble of over 50 actors and a total of more than 450 employees, the theater realizes an ambitious program with around 50 classical and contemporary pieces.[1][2][4] Three historical venues in the immediate vicinity of the Residenz are used: the main building on Max-Joseph-Platz (approx. 880 seats), the Cuvilliétheater (approx. 440 seats) and the Marstall (approx. 150 seats).[2][6] As one of the four Bayerischen Staatstheatern in Munich, it stands alongside the Bayerische Staatsoper and other renowned houses.[2][6]
Under the direction of Intendant Andreas Beck since 2019, the Residenztheater embodies a classic Ensembletheater that prioritizes contemporary drama with premieres and new adaptations.[2][3] Classical material is freshly interpreted and questioned from the perspective of the here and now in order to create relevance for current social debates.[2] The main mission lies in the combination of tradition and innovation: In addition to cultivating a classical repertoire, bold repositionings are created that provoke and inspire the audience.[2][6] This is reflected in a wide range of productions, ranging from renowned directors such as Ingmar Bergman in the past to contemporary authors.[6]
The history of the house is closely linked to Bavarian cultural history. As part of the Free State of Bavaria, it enjoys state funding and has been shaped by Intendant*innen such as Kurt Meisel, Günther Beelitz, Eberhard Witt and Dieter Dorn, who have shaped the ensemble and attracted a broad Munich audience.[1][6] Today it stands for excellence in spoken theater, with a turnover of 10–50 million euros and a ranking among the leading theater companies in Germany.[1]
A strong team supports the artistic vision: In addition to Intendant Beck, Managing Director Dr. Katja Funken-Hamann, Technical Director Andreas Grundhoff and Communications Director Ingrid Trobitz manage the operational areas.[4] Departments such as workshops, costume stock, personnel and finances ensure smooth productions.[4]
The Residenztheater shares the values of the Bayerischen Staatsschauspiels: Diversity, inclusion and social relevance are at the center, although specific sustainability initiatives are not described in detail in the sources.[2] It emphasizes a sustainable ensemble model that promotes long-term artistic careers and is committed to contemporary issues such as social change and cultural reflection.[2][3] As a state theater, it prioritizes cultural education and accessibility for a broad audience.
The Residenztheater remains a cultural milestone: It combines baroque splendor with modern drama and invites you to rediscover the world through theater.[2][9] (approx. 2480 characters)
