Über Behindert – na und?

Behindert – na und? is a non-partisan and non-denominational association that has been working for over 40 years with around 650 employees to ensure that children, young people and adults with disabilities or chronic illnesses can lead a self-determined and independent life. The association supports them in maintaining their skills, improving their potential and pursuing their interests in order to lead a life that is as independent as possible and to participate in the community despite their impairment.

The association realizes its statutory purpose by creating and maintaining measures for the care, support and promotion of children and young people with (impending) disabilities, for the implementation of health and long-term care insurance benefits and for integration assistance within the framework of the respectively valid legal regulations.

The range of services is broad and aimed at people of all ages:

For children and young people, Behindert – na und? offers, among other things, the Förderzentrum Arrenberg, a counseling center, early intervention (interdisciplinary and special education), inclusion assistance in daycare centers and schools, as well as leisure and sports activities (SAMBA). The Förderzentrum Arrenberg is an urban development and integrative project that offers children and families individual approaches to integration under one roof.
For adults, there is outpatient care and assistance, assisted living (for people with physical, mental or psychological disabilities) in shared apartments or individual apartments, as well as an assistance service.

An important building block for the implementation of the association's goals are cooperations and memberships. The association is a member of the paritätischen Wohlfahrtsverband, an umbrella organization of independent organizations, institutions and groups of welfare.

Behindert – na und? attaches great importance to protection against violence and child protection. The association has developed appropriate concepts to avoid violence in everyday work and to improve the development and participation opportunities of children with disabilities.

The association is always striving to promote inclusive work with children and young people. The project "Ganz schön L.I.N.K.?! – Lokal. Inklusiv. Nachhaltig. Kooperativ." visits open children's and youth facilities in the city of Wuppertal to enable inclusive work with children on site. As part of the project, a manual was developed to pass on helpful tips and tricks for inclusive work in child and youth welfare.

Behindert – na und? is an important player in Wuppertal when it comes to supporting people with disabilities and promoting inclusion. The association contributes to ensuring that people with disabilities can lead a self-determined and dignified life.
