The Deutsche Leberstiftung is a foundation established in 2006 dedicated to improving patient care and researching liver diseases.[1][3] As the sponsor of the renowned "Kompetenznetz Hepatitis" (Hepatitis Competence Network), the foundation has been committed since its inception to improving the chances of recovery from liver diseases and sustainably increasing the quality of life of those affected.[1][5]
The core goal of the foundation is to continuously improve the early detection and treatment of liver diseases.[3] To this end, the Deutsche Leberstiftung has set itself the following strategic goals:[1]
The Deutsche Leberstiftung operates through several specialized fields of action:[3][4]
Research funding and networking are key areas of the foundation's work. The foundation finances sabbatical and networking scholarships, awards a prestigious publication prize and conducts various therapy studies.[3][4] The HepNet Study-House is a central research facility that conducts studies and registers to improve the treatment of liver diseases.[1]
The scientific focus areas include viral and autoimmune liver diseases, liver transplantation, hepatocellular carcinoma, non-invasive diagnostic procedures such as elastography, as well as regenerative medicine and innovative therapeutic approaches.[2]
Networking and patient care are carried out via a nationwide network of associated doctors, clinics, scientists, pharmacists and self-help groups. This enables those affected to quickly and easily find a competent contact person on site.[1]
Patient and public relations includes extensive information and advice services for patients and relatives on medical issues.[3][4] The foundation publishes the renowned HepNet Journal, which is published twice a year, and organizes the established HepNet Symposium once a year.[5]
Since 2020, the Deutsche Leberstiftung has been operating a specialized register for research into fatty liver diseases (Steatotic Liver Disease, SLD). This addresses one of the most common liver diseases in industrialized countries, which can often lead to liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.[4]
The office is located in Hannover, while the foundation's headquarters are in Essen.[5] The foundation is managed by a Medical Management and a Main Management and has extensive board structures with established experts.[5][8]
The foundation was established to sustainably secure and continue the successes of the "Kompetenznetz Hepatitis" - a competence network in medicine funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.[1][6] The success of the foundation's work is based on the basic principles of continuity, sustainability and the strategic expansion of important fields of action.[4]
The Deutsche Leberstiftung positions itself as a central institution in the German healthcare system for the promotion of liver research, the networking of medical professionals and the holistic support of patients with liver diseases.
