The Deutsche Stiftung Patientenschutz is an independent organization that advocates for the interests of seriously ill, care-dependent, and dying people. It was founded in 1995 as Deutsche Hospiz Stiftung and received its current name in 2012. The foundation is financed exclusively by donations and contributions from members in order to maintain its independence.
The foundation sees itself as an expert advisor and advocate for the seriously ill and people in need of care. It is committed to improving healthcare and calls for a fundamental change in palliative care. Independence and neutrality are central values of the organization.
A central goal is to improve palliative care in Germany. The foundation calls for mobile palliative teams to strengthen care in nursing homes, hospitals, and at home. It rejects a right to active euthanasia and is committed to the self-determination and dignity of those affected.
The Deutsche Stiftung Patientenschutz is also involved at the political level to enforce the rights of the seriously ill and people in need of care. Through its independent funding, it remains free from external influences and can devote itself exclusively to the needs of its clientele.
