The TUM Klinikum Deutsches Herzzentrum pursues clearly defined sustainability goals that concern both the ecological and social aspects of modern medicine:
The German Heart Center Munich was founded in 1974 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. The close cooperation with the Technical University of Munich has existed since 1995, underscoring the center's scientific excellence. A historical highlight is the first successful heart transplant in Germany on May 7, 1981, an event that secured the center national and international recognition.
In Spring 2025, the institution was officially renamed TUM Klinikum Deutsches Herzzentrum to reflect its full integration into the TUM University Hospital. Since August 1, 2024, the Klinikum rechts der Isar and the German Heart Center Munich have jointly formed the TUM University Hospital, enabling a new dimension of cutting-edge medical collaboration and research.
The hospital is located at Lazarettstraße 36 in the district of Neuhausen-Nymphenburg in Munich and utilizes the historic architecture of the former Royal Bavarian Garrison Hospital (built 1868–1870), which today serves as a symbolic place for modern cardiac medicine.
The TUM Klinikum Deutsches Herzzentrum positions itself as a leading clinic for the cardiac medicine of the future. Through the combination of traditional surgical expertise and minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures, the center is developing new therapies that effectively overcome age limits and provide patients with longer and better care.
The objective is to lead Bavarian and German cardiac medicine to the forefront internationally and, through continuous innovation, to improve the treatment chances for people with heart disease worldwide. As an international, renowned institution with 1,400 employees, the center attracts specialists from around the world and remains an important point of contact for complex cardiac cases.
The future of the center will be shaped by the integration of clinical practice, scientific research, and technological development. With cutting-edge medicine of the future under one roof, the TUM Klinikum Deutsches Herzzentrum is setting new standards in cardiac care and remains an important driver for health development in Germany and Europe.
The center is not just a hospital, but a science and innovation center that combines cardiac medicine at the highest level with future-oriented research, thereby sustainably improving the quality of life for millions of people worldwide.
