The DRK-Ortsverein Leverkusen is an established humanitarian organization that has been active in the city of Leverkusen for over 100 years – more precisely since 1900 – as part of the German Red Cross (DRK)[1][7]. With around 60 active members, the association is fully committed on a voluntary basis to the concerns of the citizens of the city[7].
The Ortsverein is one of four independent Ortsvereine in the DRK-Kreisverband Leverkusen and is therefore an important component of the complex DRK aid system[7].
The association's activities focus on several key areas:
Sanitätsdienst: The association provides medical care at events of all kinds, including soccer games of Bayer 04 Leverkusen (Bundesliga, cup and international games), the Bierbörse and Sankt-Martins-Umzüge[4]. The Bereitschaft of DRK OV Leverkusen, with around 30 members, is the largest Bereitschaft in the Kreisverband and covers the districts of Alkenrath, Manfort, Schlebusch, Steinbüchel, Wiesdorf, Küppersteg, Bürrig and Rheindorf[4].
Blutspende: The DRK makes a decisive contribution to the supply of blood donations - around 15,000 blood donations are needed every day in Germany, which are provided by the DRK blood donation services[2]. The local helpers create the organizational framework for this life-saving activity.
Katastrophenschutz: The Ortsverein is active in disaster control and supports the nationwide Einsatzeinheit NRW in larger operations[7].
Rettungsdienst: In addition to the Sanitätsdienst, the Rettungsdienst is another focus of the work[7].
The German Red Cross and thus also the Ortsverein Leverkusen save people, help in emergencies, offer community and stand by those in need - both in Germany and worldwide[7]. The organization is part of the world's largest humanitarian movement and is committed to central humanitarian principles: Humanity, Solidarity and Humanitarian Law[7].
The association's work always follows the principles of the DRK and is based on the conviction that everyone can save lives[1].
The Ortsverein is constantly looking for committed people who would like to get involved. Entry into the Bereitschaft is possible from the age of 16, and no special prior knowledge is required[4]. Interested parties can get involved in various areas - be it in the Sanitätsdienst, in blood donations, in disaster control or simply in the community of committed people. The association emphasizes that every contribution counts and that everyone can become part of a strong, meaningful community[7].
As part of a movement that has stood for humanity worldwide for over 150 years, the DRK-Ortsverein Leverkusen makes a very concrete contribution to saving lives and supporting people in emergency situations[7]. The association's work is integral to the infrastructure of humanitarian aid in Leverkusen and beyond.
