The Deutsche Hauptstelle für Suchtfragen e. V. (DHS) is the central umbrella organization for addiction support and addiction self-help in Germany. Since its founding in 1947, the DHS has represented the interests of its members to the Federal Government, federal authorities, and pension and health insurance companies.
The DHS coordinates and promotes the work of its member associations, which include almost all providers of outpatient and inpatient addiction support as well as addiction self-help. Current problems are analyzed through specialist committees and a scientific advisory board, statements are developed, and impulses are given for the further development of standards in addiction support and addiction prevention.
The core tasks of the DHS include:
The DHS provides comprehensive information about legal and illegal addictive substances as well as addictive behavior, from alcohol and nicotine to medication and illegal drugs, to gambling, eating disorders, and excessive use of digital media. Causes, forms of consumption, and risks are highlighted.
A special focus is on educating about addiction in various living environments, such as in the workplace, in families with addiction problems, among migrants, and in old age. The DHS is committed to gender-sensitive addiction work and offers a variety of information materials, including brochures, flyers, and work aids, also in Easy Language and in multiple languages.
The DHS is a member of numerous organizations and associations and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health. The goal is to sustainably improve the prevention and treatment of addictive disorders in Germany through evidence-based information and coordinated measures.
