The Dr. Axe-Stiftung is a non-profit and charitable foundation based in Bonn that is dedicated to promoting a variety of social goals[3]. The foundation was founded in 1997 by the Bonn merchant Dr. Hans GĂĽnther Axe and has been managed by his heir since 2008, who continues his legacy in his spirit[1].
The foundation pursues a broad spectrum of non-profit and charitable purposes according to binding guidelines specified by the founder[1]. Its work is based on humanitarian and cultural principles that reflect the diverse interests and goals of its founder[3].
The Dr. Axe-Stiftung is active in five main areas[3]:
Animal welfare is one of the central funding priorities[7]. The foundation cares for animals in need, preserves endangered breeds of animals, especially farm animals, and pursues measures of animal ethics and animal education[7]. Its work is based on Albert Schweitzer's idea of "reverence for life"[7]. For this purpose, the foundation operates two Lebenshöfe: the Hasenberghof in the Eifel and the Düysenhof on Sylt[3]. The Hasenberghof also serves as a learning location for preschool children and school classes[2].
Education and Pedagogy are integrally linked to the animal welfare commitment. The foundation imparts animal ethical knowledge to teachers, educators and school and kindergarten children[3]. It offers further training, free learning materials and regular specialist speakers on animal welfare topics[7].
Art and Culture are promoted through the operation of an art cabinet[3]. The foundation has built up a significant collection of works from the DĂĽsseldorfer Malerschule and presents artists such as Walter Ophey and his contemporary circle[1].
Support for victims of violence: The foundation supports needy victims of violent crimes[3].
Elderly care and research: In addition, the foundation is dedicated to elderly care and makes donations for research and teaching at German universities[3].
The foundation employs more than 60 people in its various areas[8]. It is subject to foundation supervision by the Bezirksregierung Köln and is recognized by the tax office as non-profit and charitable[3]. A three-member board manages the assets and conducts business, while a five-member advisory board monitors the budget and financial management and decides on funding[3].
The foundation implements its sustainability goals through long-term, structural projects: It creates permanent habitats for animals in need, imparts knowledge for cross-generational behavioral changes and preserves cultural heritage[3][7]. Its educational initiatives such as school competitions for animal welfare and geocaching activities promote active learning and community participation[10].
The Dr. Axe-Stiftung embodies a holistic understanding of non-profit work that combines animal welfare, cultural promotion, education and social responsibility, thereby creating sustainable social added value.
