The Evangelischer Kirchenkreis Herford is an important part of the Evangelische Kirche von Westfalen and comprises 25 congregations in five regions: Bünde, Enger-Spenge, Herford, Hiddenhausen, and Löhne. With approximately 111,000 members, it is one of the largest church districts in Westfalen.
The mission of the church district is to promote and support church life. It follows democratic principles and values cooperation and the balance of power and burdens between the congregations. The leadership is ensured by the Kreissynode (District Synod) and the Superintendent.
The Kirchenkreis Herford places great emphasis on social and educational initiatives. By operating daycare centers and alternative schools, it contributes to the education and care of children. It also promotes cooperation between the congregations to ensure a strong and sustainable church structure.
The Kirchenkreis Herford has a long history dating back to 1818. It is strongly influenced by the revival movement and has evolved over time through various restructurings. Today, approximately 1,300 employees work in the church district, including pastors and employees in the various institutions.
