The Freie Waldorfschule Kleinmachnow is an established all-day educational institution that offers children and adolescents a comprehensive, individually oriented school education from the entry class to the Abitur (high school diploma). Founded in 1991 after the peaceful revolution, it sees itself as a public school within the Federation of Free Waldorf Schools in Germany. With around 400 students, the school pursues an educational approach that implements the principles of Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf education and consciously creates space for the individual development of each child[1][6][8].
The school's offerings include a reliable half-day primary school (grades 1-6) with all-day care, a "Moving Classroom" in the lower grades, and an upper school with block lessons (grades 7-13). Foreign languages (English and French) are introduced from the first grade. The school places particular emphasis on artistic and craft subjects, which are supplemented by a variety of internships – including an agricultural internship in France as well as vocational and social internships. In addition, the school orchestra, choir and movement-oriented subjects promote the holistic development of the students. A support and therapy area, including school doctor's consultation hours, specifically supports individual needs[1][2][4][9].
The entry class, referred to as the "Waldklasse" (forest class), offers children who need a gentle introduction to school readiness a protected learning environment with its own garden and direct access to the forest as a nature-pedagogical learning space. In addition to cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills as well as social skills are specifically strengthened through playful learning, creative handicrafts and movement activities[2].
The mission of the Freie Waldorfschule Kleinmachnow is to open up a diverse field of experience for students through a holistic approach of intellectual, artistic, social and practical education. The school promotes independence, a sense of responsibility and the individual development of personalities in a trusting community[1][7]. The values are based on freedom, autonomy and a respectful, supportive school atmosphere in which each child is valued as a unique individual[6].
Sustainability goals and initiatives are integrated into the pedagogical concept, for example through the practical agricultural internship, the use of natural and outdoor spaces for learning and movement, and the awareness of ecological connections, which plays a central role within Waldorf education. The embedding in the natural environment and the high degree of manual work promote a responsible relationship with the environment. In this way, the school contributes to raising awareness of sustainable ways of life and learning[1][2][6].
Overall, the Freie Waldorfschule Kleinmachnow offers a diverse and holistic educational program that combines traditional academic qualifications with artistic-practical support and social development. Through a harmonious balance of freedom and structure, it supports the development of young people into self-confident, responsible personalities in a vibrant school community.
