The Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd (HfG) is a specialized state university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg, which is exclusively dedicated to the field of Design. As the only one of its kind in the region, it trains around 700 students in innovative Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, with a focus on interdisciplinary design practice.[1][2][8]
The HfG offers four Bachelor's degree programs (each B.A.):
In addition, there is the Master's program Strategische Gestaltung (M.A.), which combines design with management and research.[5][6] Main topics include Gesundheit, Bildung, Energie, Mobilität, Kommunikation und Kultur – areas in which students address real social challenges.[5][7]
The curricular model is unique: The first three semesters are dedicated to intensive fundamentals, which provide a solid repertoire of methods, techniques and aesthetic principles. Topics such as surface and space, light and color, time and movement are systematically explored, supplemented by drawing, typography, photography, film, multimedia as well as theories on design, sociology, ecology and Design Thinking.[1][2][5] From the fourth semester onwards, self-selected projects follow in small teams, with a focus on presentations instead of written exams – practical and cross-media.[4]
The HfG understands design as an innovative discipline with scientific, social and technical references that sustainably shapes socio-economic developments. The aim is to promote curiosity, methodical thinking and intercultural skills, to impart well-founded technical content and to create an open culture of discussion with international lecturers.[1][3] The holistic approach creates freedom for self-determined learning, international orientation and rational justification of design decisions.[3] Graduates benefit from excellent job market opportunities in professional practice and design research.[1]
Especially in Kommunikationsgestaltung, didaktische Kommunikation is in the foreground, for example for education and socially relevant topics such as ecology. Projects aim at meaningful, forward-looking solutions that implement uniform concepts across media.[4]
Sustainability runs through the HfG profile: Ökologie und Umweltwissenschaft are core contents of the basics, as are ethical design approaches in degree programs such as Produkt- und Kommunikationsgestaltung.[1][2][4] In the Master's program Strategische Gestaltung, design is positioned as a tool for social progress – beyond financial success towards improved quality of life, including cultural and social science perspectives.[5] Projects address topics such as energy and mobility sustainably, with a focus on long-lasting solution principles.[5] The HfG is a founding member of the doctoral association of the universities of applied sciences Baden-Württemberg (since 2022), which strengthens research on design challenges relevant to the future.[2]
The HfG enjoys a high reputation, wins prizes for student work and celebrates its 250th anniversary of training in design in 2026.[6] Initiatives such as the HfG Design Campus (trial studies since 2007) or Girls'Day promote career orientation and diversity.[2][6] Digital exhibitions and laboratory weeks enrich university life.[6]
The HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd shapes designers who solve complex problems creatively and responsibly – for a better future.[1][3]
