Hospiz St. Martin is a specialized care facility in Stuttgart dedicated to the holistic support and care of seriously ill and dying people and their relatives.[1][3] The hospice pursues a comprehensive approach that includes not only medical and nursing care, but also emotional, spiritual and psychosocial support in one of the most difficult phases of life.[2]
The central mission of Hospiz St. Martin is to make the remaining lifetime of seriously ill people as pleasant and high-quality as possible.[3] The hospice believes that dying is equally about living – and wants to accompany people with dignity in their farewell, while at the same time maintaining or improving their subjective quality of life.[2] A central approach is to support the desire of many people to be allowed to die in their familiar home environment.[3]
The hospice offers a differentiated range of services for various life situations:[1][3]
Inpatient Hospice: A specialized care facility that accommodates up to eight guests who suffer from progressive, incurable diseases and have a limited life expectancy.[3][5] The single rooms are modernly furnished and have their own bathrooms as well as access to common rooms, a roof terrace and an in-house chapel.[5]
Outpatient Hospice Service for Adults: The team offers domestic advice and support by full-time professionals and qualified volunteers to support the seriously ill and their relatives in their familiar environment.[6] The support is free of charge and regardless of religious affiliation, spiritual orientation or nationality.[6]
Outpatient Hospice Service for Children and Adolescents: The hospice offers specialized support for families with seriously ill children and adolescents from the time of diagnosis, as well as for siblings and children whose parents are terminally ill.[3][8]
Bereavement Support: A multifaceted offer for mourners of all ages – children, adolescents, families and adults – helps in processing grief and loss.[1][2]
Hospiz St. Martin employs full-time professionals, most of whom have the "Palliative Care" specialist training and are available to guests around the clock.[5] The multidisciplinary team works closely with pastors and volunteers to ensure holistic support.[2][5]
To support and alleviate, the hospice offers additional therapeutic services such as craniosacral therapy, music and art therapy.[5] The spiritual and pastoral care is non-denominational and open to all religions and also includes an in-house chapel as a place of rest and meditation.[5]
A special feature of Hospiz St. Martin is the strong involvement of volunteers. Currently, about 100 volunteers support the intensive work of the hospice.[7] The hospice offers regular qualification courses and continuously accompanies volunteers through further training, case discussions and supervisions to prepare them well for their demanding work.[7] The volunteers support not only in the inpatient hospice, but also with those affected at home, in retirement and nursing homes, hospitals and facilities for integration assistance.[7]
Hospiz St. Martin stands for a patient-centered and family-oriented approach, in which the needs of the dying person and his relatives are the focus.[4] The hospice emphasizes the importance of human dignity, respect, openness and empathy in all aspects of its work.[6] The focus is on creating security through professional care and space for encounters, conversation and personal development.
Through its holistic and non-denominational approach, Hospiz St. Martin Stuttgart offers comprehensive support for people in crisis situations and helps to ensure that farewells can take place with dignity and support.
