The Apollo-Theater Siegen is a modern playhouse in the heart of the city of Siegen, which has established itself as a diverse cultural center for theater, concerts, dance and musical performances.[1][2] The theater was opened on August 31, 2007 and replaces the previous, dilapidated Kulturhaus on Spandauer Straße. After almost 50 years of commitment from the citizens of Siegen to their own theater, this dream came true with a modern new building that preserves the historical facade of the original building built in 1935.[1][2]
The Apollo-Theater offers a multi-faceted and diverse cultural program for all generations.[2] The house presents a balanced mix of classic plays, contemporary productions, concerts, dance performances and musical theater productions.[1] Of particular note is the importance of children's and youth theater, which has played a central role in the program since its founding and opens up diverse theater experiences for young people of different age groups.[2]
The theater is operated as a playhouse without a permanent ensemble and produces two to three of its own productions per season, supplemented by high-quality guest performances by national and international artists.[1][2] The current artistic director and managing director Markus Steinwender, who has been in charge of the house since the 2022/23 season, is focusing on presenting the audience with a successful mix of new and international productions, outstanding regional artists and proven classics.[2]
The theater complex has extensive and modernly equipped premises.[2] The main hall offers space for more than 500 spectators, creating an optimal atmosphere for large productions. In addition, the Apollo-Studio in the foyer on the Sieg and the Apollo-Stage directly on the stage behind the "Iron Curtain" are available, which are used for smaller and more experimental formats.[2]
The Apollo-Theater sees itself as an important cultural center for the Siegen-Wittgenstein region.[2] The theater's mission is to create high-quality cultural experiences for the population of all ages and to promote local and international artistic talents. The house attaches particular importance to networking within the city and beyond in order to strengthen culture as a connecting element of society.[2]
Beyond pure performances, the Apollo-Theater is intensively involved in cultural mediation and audience development.[2] The theater offers multi-faceted mediation programs for all generations. Special formats such as "Theater & Talk", "Theater & Kirche" and "Apollo begrüßt" invite the audience to actively participate, get into conversation and get to know the theater work. Guided tours allow interested visitors to look behind the scenes and experience the theater as a complete work of art.[2]
The Apollo-Theater was realized with significant public and private funds.[1] The city of Siegen, the district of Siegen-Wittgenstein and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, together with commercial and private donors, invested around 17 million euros in the new building.[1] Sustainable operating financing is supported by the Stiftung Apollo-Theater Siegen, which, as an essential financing factor, promotes the operation of the theater from the proceeds of its capital.[7]
In recent years, the Apollo-Theater has developed into a supra-regional center for culture and the arts and is an integral part of the Siegen art and culture scene.[7] With its broad program and its commitment to artistic excellence, the theater not only attracts local audiences, but also radiates to the surrounding region and contributes to the cultural profiling of the city of Siegen.
