The
The Institut für Klinische Transfusionsmedizin und Zelltherapie Heidelberg (IKTZ) is a non-profit organization that functions as a specialized transfusion medicine service provider and blood donation center. It supplies the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg as well as other clinics and practices in the region with high-quality blood products, diagnostic services and innovative therapy procedures. The blood bank of the IKTZ is also available around the clock to provide advice on immunohematological and transfusion medicine issues.
A central focus of the institute is on the processing and provision of stem cell preparations. In the clean room, the production, testing and storage of allogeneic and autologous stem cell preparations is carried out technically at a high level, which is directly linked to the stem cell transplantation program of the Universitätsklinikums. There, patients with malignant and congenital bone marrow diseases are treated.
The IKTZ is closely linked to medical research, in particular through a cooperation with the Institut für Immunologie at the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg. A main goal is the research of the human immune system and the development of novel diagnostic parameters as well as innovative therapeutic strategies, in particular immunotherapies for tumor diseases, autoimmune diseases and immunodeficiencies. These immunotherapies are considered to be particularly targeted and low-side-effect treatment options and reflect the innovative character of the institute's work.
In addition, the IKTZ is active in teaching and imparts sound knowledge of transfusion medicine and the safe handling of blood products to medical students. The comprehensive expertise of the institute is complemented by many years of experience since its beginnings in 1907.
Mission und Werte
The mission of the IKTZ includes ensuring a quality-assured supply of blood products and cell-based therapies, promoting innovative immunological research, and promoting education and safety in transfusion medicine. Scientific excellence, patient-centered care and the promotion of sustainable health solutions characterize the self-image.
