The Internationales Zentrum für Professionalisierung der Elementarpädagogik (PEP) at the University of Graz is the largest university center in the German-speaking area for early childhood education. It supports over 15,000 childcare facilities in Austria and beyond through educational campaigns, practical research and consulting services.[3][4]
The PEP offers a wide range of educational materials that support educators in kindergartens and nurseries in deepening relevant topics and promoting quality development in practice. Core offerings include scientifically based instruments such as GrazIAS Basic, a standardized observation tool for recording and developing the quality of interaction between professionals and children (based on approximately 5 hours of participatory observation).[2][8] These are complemented by that focus on high-quality interactions in childcare facilities, as well as advice, qualifications and guidelines for educators.[7][10]
The core mission of the PEP is: Children need high-quality early childhood education and care by professional staff - the PEP supports exactly that. It aims at the professionalization of specialists, quality development and digital knowledge transfer, supported by sound research. Values such as cooperation, practicality and evidence-based approaches are at the heart of the center's work: Through national and international projects, the center works with a variety of actors to set standards in early childhood education.[5][6][9]
In numerous research projects, the PEP explores topics in early childhood education and develops innovative approaches. It cooperates internationally and nationally to develop practical recommendations for educators. The team, spread across locations in Graz (Austria) and Berlin (Germany), is led by experts such as Ass. Prof. Dr. Eva Pölzl-Stefanec (Deputy Head, Specialist in Early Childhood Education) and Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Catherine Walter-Laager. Location managers such as Josepha Barbarics, Dr. Jasmin Bempreiksz-Luthardt and Sophie Westphal ensure network-based collaboration.[6]
Although specific sustainability initiatives are not highlighted in detail in the sources, the PEP integrates long-term quality standards into its work, promoting sustainable professionalization and stable structures in early childhood education. This includes supporting facilities in continuous development to ensure high-quality care for future generations - an indirectly sustainable approach through evidence-based practice.[7]
The PEP positions itself as an indispensable partner for the industry: It combines university knowledge with everyday reality to promote quality in pedagogy and strengthen the work of educators. With its focus on interaction, research and materials, it makes a significant contribution to the professionalization of the sector and sets new standards in the German-speaking area.[1][3][9]
