JenaWasser is a special-purpose association as a public corporation, founded on January 1, 1993, which ensures the sovereign public service provision for drinking water and wastewater in Jena and the surrounding region. Without the intention of making a profit, the association supplies around 130,000 people with high-quality drinking water and operates the environmentally sound disposal for approximately 156,000 inhabitants. It unites the city of Jena with 26 other cities and municipalities from the Saale-Holzland district and the Weimarer Land into a solid partnership.[1][2][3]
The core of JenaWasser's mission is: "Water is our mission". The association covers the entire water cycle – from the sustainable extraction of raw water to the treatment into drinking water to the purification of wastewater and return to public waters. For this purpose, JenaWasser operates a modern network with , and innovative facilities such as , , and five waterworks. The largest facility, the Jena-Burgau waterworks, supplies 40,000 people daily. The Jena Central Sewage Treatment Plant with a capacity of 210,000 population equivalents treats an average of 14,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.[1][3]
The technical and commercial management is the responsibility of Stadtwerke Jena as a long-standing partner. They ensure operation, maintenance, expansion and emergency services around the clock, supported by subsidiaries such as Stadtwerke Jena Netze and varys.[5][6]
JenaWasser stands for Responsibility, Sustainability and Solidarity. As a solidarity community of urban and rural municipalities, the association prioritizes the protection of the environment and waters, so that future generations can use water without worry. High standards apply in the code of conduct for employees, supplemented by regular certifications from independent institutes. The cooperative collaboration with municipalities and associations as well as motivated teams with modern technology characterize the association.[1][2]
Sustainability is central: JenaWasser minimizes resource losses in the water cycle and relies on environmentally sound processes. Milestones include the climate adaptation strategy (awarded the climate protection prize "Die Blaue Libelle" in 2019), which addresses extreme weather events, as well as projects such as "Energy Self-Sufficient Jena Sewage Treatment Plant" (2012–2014) with biogas plant and combined heat and power plant. Further highlights: Environmental project AQUA-AGENTEN (since 2017), expansions of the sewage treatment plants (e.g. Tautenburg 2015, Camburg 2000) and awards as a Tap Water Friendly Company.[2][4][9]
Through continuous modernizations – from the reconstruction of the central sewage treatment plant (1998–2001) to the connection of new regions such as Hetschburg (2020) – JenaWasser ensures a resilient, forward-looking water supply. The association thus promotes health, quality of life and ecological protection in the region.[1][3][4]
