Kahal Adass Jisroel (KAJ) is a dynamically growing Jewish community in Berlin-Mitte that combines authentic traditional Judaism with active engagement in German and Berlin society.[1] The community was officially founded in 2013 and has since developed into an important point of contact for Jewish life in Germany.[1]
KAJ currently comprises more than 450 members and serves approximately annually through its diverse offerings and services.[1] The community is characterized by its : its members represent a broad spectrum of Jewish movements – from traditional to modern-orthodox and "yeshivish" to various Chassidic directions.[1] This pluralistic approach makes it possible to unite different expressions of Jewish faith under one roof.
The central mission of KAJ is to enable authentic and active Jewish life in accordance with the Torah commandments – an ideal that can only be realized in community.[1] The community explicitly sees itself as an integral part of German society and is consciously involved in various initiatives to promote social cohesion.[1]
Through its work, KAJ is sending an important signal throughout Germany and internationally that Jewish life in all its facets is possible and vibrant again in Berlin.[1] This makes the community a symbol of diversity, religious authenticity and social integration.
The heart of the community is the Skoblo Synagogue and Education Center – the last private courtyard synagogue in Berlin.[1] This historical site is used by the KAJ community with great commitment and visibly shapes the cityscape of Berlin through authentic traditional Judaism.
The ortho-dox led and practicing community consciously attracts Jewish people from all over Germany and Europe to Berlin to become part of this growing community.[1] This attraction shows that KAJ is gaining importance as a center of Jewish life in Germany and is making an important contribution to the revitalization of Jewish culture and tradition.
