Sportjugend Berlin is the youth organization of the Landessportbund Berlin and functions as a democratic representation of interests for over 341,000 children, adolescents and young people in Berlin sports clubs[3]. As a recognized provider of independent youth welfare, the organization develops and operates projects and facilities in the field of sports, sport-oriented youth social work, leisure education and extracurricular youth education[3].
The Sportjugend Berlin pursues an inclusive and holistic support philosophy. The organization's mission statement is based on the principle of developing young people into responsible and community-minded individuals through sport[2]. The organization is open to all children and young people, regardless of origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability and ideology[2].
The Sportjugend is specifically committed to avoiding and reducing disadvantages through sports programs and creating positive living conditions for young people[2]. A central focus is on the promotion of democratic structures, self-organization in youth work in sports and civic engagement[2].
Education and Qualification Offers: The Sportjugend's educational center functions as a central training and further education center for children's and youth work in sports[4]. The qualification program is aimed at instructors and trainers from sports clubs as well as pedagogical specialists from daycare centers, schools and youth work[4]. As a guest house, the educational center also offers modern seminar rooms, sports and leisure facilities and accommodation[6].
Early Childhood Movement Promotion: Through the partner organization Kinder in Bewegung (KiB), the Sportjugend operates 22 daycare centers in Berlin, in which movement is anchored as a central pedagogical principle[1]. Around 2,500 children benefit from playful movement experiences that promote not only motor skills and health, but also social and cognitive skills[1].
Youth Work and Social Integration: The GSJ (Gesellschaft für Sport und Jugendsozialarbeit), a supporting organization of the Sportjugend, carries out measures of general and sports youth work and offers competitive, popular and recreational sports with social and sports pedagogical means[5]. A particular focus is on the integration of disadvantaged children and young people as well as on international encounters to reduce prejudice[5].
Vacation Programs and Youth Support: The organization offers vacation programs for children and young people that combine movement and education[6]. In addition, young people who want to get involved in sports and society are supported[6].
As the largest youth association in Berlin and a member of the Landesjugendring Berlin (LJR), the Sportjugend Berlin is a central player in the Berlin sports landscape[3]. It works closely with the Landessportbund Berlin, whose membership includes over 781,000 people in 2,300 clubs[3].
The Sportjugend Berlin anchors its work in a sustainable and future-oriented support philosophy. Through high quality standards in early childhood education, targeted specialist training and preventive youth work, the organization contributes to an active and healthy upbringing of young people[1]. The organization is committed to democratic participation and the strengthening of civic engagement in order to shape Berlin's sports landscape sustainably[2].
With its comprehensive range of services, the Sportjugend Berlin combines popular sports promotion, professional training and further education, equal opportunities and social participation into a holistic approach to youth development through sport.
