The Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirchenkreis Schleswig-Flensburg is a dynamic church organization in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany, which includes the district of Schleswig-Flensburg and the city of Flensburg. With 45 congregations and around 150,000 members, it forms the spiritual and social heart of a diverse region on the Baltic Sea coast.[1][4]
Since its founding on May 1, 2009 through the merger of the former church districts of Angeln, Schleswig and Flensburg, the church district is divided into three deaneries: Angeln and Schleswig under Provost Helgo Jacobs and Flensburg under Provost Rebecca Lenz. These deaneries are further divided into such as Angeln-Nord-West, Flensburg Stadt I-IV, Haddeby, Kropp or Ost-Angeln, which consist of merged congregations such as Havetoft-Sieverstedt, St. Nikolai or Eggebek-Jörl.[1][2][3] The as the "Parliament of the Church" unites representatives from congregations, services and employees to make decisions.[1]
Around 1,500 full-time employees, over 100 pastors and 5,400 volunteers – including 600 leaders in church councils – ensure smooth operation.[1] A detailed organizational chart (as of 2024/2026) arranges bodies such as the church district administration, departments for finance, personnel, cemetery administration, registration, construction and real estate, as well as works such as the Diakonisches Werk.[5][10]
The church district offers a broad spectrum of spiritual, social and educational services. Church celebrations, services and events such as senior afternoons, "Moin Zusammen!", silent meditations or devotions with music characterize the everyday offer.[9] The social works are particularly noteworthy:
These facilities are aimed at locals, vacationers and families, promoting inclusion and community.[1]
The main mission of the church district is to make the Gospel come alive: Through worship, pastoral care and charity, it supports people in all situations in life. Values such as community, compassion and service are at the center – supported by Lutheran tradition, voluntary commitment and interdisciplinary cooperation. The focus is on inclusion, spiritual support and social justice in a modern, pluralistic society.[1][4]
Although explicit sustainability goals are not described in detail in the sources, the activities reflect a sustainable approach: The Kindertagesstättenwerk trains employees to promote child-friendly, environmentally conscious pedagogy. Diaconal services address long-term social challenges such as poverty and isolation. The church district is involved in regional networks for climate protection and inclusion, as is common in the Nordkirche – for example through energy-efficient church buildings and educational programs on the protection of creation.[5][10] Current developments (as of 2026) emphasize digital offers and barrier-free access.[5]
With its roots in a history strong in mergers and strong voluntary support, the Kirchenkreis Schleswig-Flensburg is an indispensable partner for spiritual growth and social action. It combines tradition with modernity and invites you to become part of a vibrant community.[1][2]
