The Dr. Hans und Hildegard Koester-Stiftung was founded in 2008 by Hildegard Koester, the wife of Dr. Hans Koester. The foundation is dedicated to the promotion of art and culture, science and research, and welfare.
A central concern of the foundation is the appreciation and preservation of the artistic heritage of Alexander Koester, the nephew of Dr. Hans Koester. To this end, the foundation provides its extensive collection of Koester paintings to museums to make them accessible to the public. In the medium term, the foundation plans to build an Alexander Koester Center in Klausen/Südtirol in cooperation with the Land Südtirol. The Stadtmuseum Klausen is currently archiving a large part of Alexander Koester's paintings and is aiming for a future permanent exhibition.
Another important goal of the foundation is the promotion of medical research, especially in the field of tumor research. This concern stems from the personal experience of the founding couple, both of whom were successfully treated with radiation therapy. In this context, the foundation, in partnership with the DEGRO (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Radioonkologie e. V.), annually awards the Koester Prize for outstanding lectures at the annual meeting of the DEGRO.
In addition, the foundation is involved in the field of welfare, with a special focus on supporting hospice facilities. The founder, Mrs. Hildegard Koester, has stipulated that hospice facilities in particular should be supported. For example, the Lüner Hospiz is supported by financial contributions from the foundation.
