The Kupferstädter Bau- und Projektmanagement GmbH is a 100 percent subsidiary of the city of Stolberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was founded in 2023 as the first flood-affected city in NRW to quickly and efficiently advance the reconstruction after the devastating flood disaster of July 2021 [1][3][5]. Under the leadership of Managing Director Wilfried Sterck, an experienced architect and M. Eng., the company coordinates extensive building construction and civil engineering projects that are intended not only to rebuild the city, but also to design it sustainably, innovatively and in a future-oriented manner [1][3][6].
The portfolio comprises over 20 central reconstruction measures, including the new construction of the town hall – the largest project of its kind in NRW – the demolition of the old town hall, fire stations in Zweifall, Atsch and Vicht, daycare centers and clubhouses in Vicht and Zweifall, elementary schools in Zweifall, Hermannstraße and Grüntalstraße, a gymnasium with a cafeteria, the Frankentalstraße cultural center, the Villa Lynen and infrastructure such as Salmstraße, Steinweg, Bernardshammer retaining wall, Bastinsweiher and the city archive [4]. These are complemented by sports and leisure facilities such as the Tennisheim Zweifall and the Mehrzweckhalle Vicht. The company acquires additional specialist staff to implement projects such as street redesigns and public buildings more quickly, and uses modern tools such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) through certified project managers [1][6].
The main mission is: A reconstruction that is fair to future generations, that repairs physical damage, strengthens community trust and makes Stolberg more resilient. Core values are sustainability, innovation and future orientation. "We are making Stolberg more sustainable and future-oriented than before," emphasizes Wilfried Sterck. This is reflected in groundbreaking concepts that go beyond mere repairs and secure the city for future generations [1][3][5].
Sustainability is at the heart of everything: projects integrate environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient designs and resilient structures against flood risks. The company is involved in the "Grüne Talachse 2030" project, which is driving the energy transition with 13 energy-intensive companies such as Prym, Aurubis and Kerpen Datacom – including feasibility studies for renewable energies and flood protection measures in the Vichtbach valley [2]. Supplemented by modern information platforms with QR codes on construction signs and individual illustrations, the team promotes transparency and citizen participation [5]. This makes the reconstruction a model for climate-resilient urban development.
With a team of qualified architects, engineers and business people – including Ralf Gies, Bodo Jülicher, Anna Kirchner and other specialists – the GmbH creates a dynamic working environment and invites participation [6]. Together for reconstruction: This motto unites the city, business and citizens for a strong, green Stolberg [4].
