Das Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Hessen is the central monument authority of the state and responsible for the protection, research and communication of the cultural heritage of HESSEN. Based in the historic Schloss Biebrich in Wiesbaden as well as branch offices in Darmstadt and Marburg and the Archäologisches Landesmuseum with locations at the Glauberg and in Saalburg, the office oversees a diverse and rich cultural heritage - from archaeological sites to historic buildings to important UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The main tasks of the Landesamt include the systematic recording and inventory of all cultural monuments in HESSEN, the management of the monument register and the scientific investigation and documentation of monuments. The office advises and supports owners and authorities in the care, investigation and restoration of monuments and is significantly involved in the development and implementation of monument funding programs. With the digital monument database DenkXweb, the Landesamt offers a modern platform for transparent and public research on cultural monuments and ensembles.
The office is divided into the hessenARCHÄOLOGIE, Bau- und Kunstdenkmalpflege and the Präsidialabteilung departments. The team of around 170 employees is committed to the preservation and communication of HESSEN's state history and contributes to raising awareness of monument protection through scientific projects, public relations and educational programs. The office sees itself as a link between science, administration and the public and promotes dialogue about the importance of monuments for the identity and future of society.
A central concern of the Landesamt is the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage for future generations. This includes not only the professional preservation and restoration of monuments, but also the integration of monument protection into current social challenges such as climate protection and energy efficiency. The office supports owners in the implementation of measures that combine the preservation of monuments with modern requirements.
Das Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Hessen understands monument protection as a task for society as a whole and is committed to an active and responsible examination of cultural heritage. With the magazine "Denkmal Hessen" and numerous events and publications, the office regularly provides information about current projects, developments and innovations in monument preservation. The cooperation with Unteren Denkmalschutzbehörden, science and citizens is of central importance.
