Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Berlin (LSFB)

The Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Berlin (LSFB) is an institution under public law based in Berlin. It was founded in 2021 and is closely linked to the State of Berlin. The LSFB is responsible for the procurement, administration and maintenance of rail vehicles for S-Bahn traffic in the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region.

• Procurement of new vehicles: The LSFB takes over the pre-financing and monitoring of vehicle construction as well as subsequent maintenance.
• Financing and administration: It is responsible for the financial aspects of vehicle procurement and ensures that the vehicles are made available to the railway transport companies (EVU) for use after completion.
• Workshops and infrastructure: The LSFB organizes the construction and leasing of land for the necessary factory facilities and service facilities.

The main mission of the LSFB is to ensure the economical and high-quality supply of S-Bahn services to the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region. By taking over vehicle ownership, a monopoly situation is to be avoided in order to create fair and competitive conditions. The LSFB aims to use the vehicles efficiently over their entire lifespan of around 30 years.

Although the LSFB is mainly focused on the procurement and maintenance of vehicles, it also has an indirect influence on more environmentally friendly means of transport. By promoting efficient transport systems and using modern technologies, it contributes to sustainability in the transport sector. In addition, the LSFB supports the economic management of the vehicles in order to optimize long-term use and conserve resources.
