The Landgräfliche Stiftung von 1721 in Bad Homburg is one of the oldest youth welfare institutions in Germany and has been dedicated to the care and support of children and young people in difficult situations for almost 300 years.[2][1]
Founded by Landgraf Friedrich III. Jacob von Hessen-Homburg, the foundation originated as the Homburg poorhouse, workhouse, and orphanage. Construction began in 1715, the building on Waisenhausplatz was completed in 1721, and the first five children moved in on April 15, 1742. The foundation charter of May 21, 1742, established the basic mission: religious, educational, and social support for those in need.[2] Despite initial challenges such as lack of funds, it survived and moved to a modern new building in 1968. Further renovations followed: single rooms and apartments were built from 1989–1998, and a for hot water was installed in 2006/2007 – an early contribution to sustainability.[2][1]
In three building complexes with spacious common rooms, open spaces, and functional rooms, the foundation cares for up to 30 children and young people around the clock, 365 days a year.[1] The modern, therapeutic education concept is aimed at young people whose development is proceeding under difficult conditions. It promotes strengths, skills, and independent action to make them strong, community-minded personalities who can stand on their own in society.[1][3]
The Hauptmission is based on the foundation charter: a temporary center of life that offers effective help. Priority is given to returning to families of origin; if necessary, alternative forms of housing are developed. Residents participate via Heimrat participation opportunities.[3] Employees receive further training and support for high-quality work.[1]
The actions are based on christlichen Normen und Werten and the guiding principles of Heilpädagogik. Appreciation, respect for individuality, and needs-oriented support are at the center. This includes physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being. The therapeutic educational work is process-oriented: children and young people set the path, the foundation provides impulses for further development.[3]
Sustainability is evident in the solar system and an environmentally conscious campus with play and leisure rooms. The foundation emphasizes long-lasting structures and invests in energy-efficient modernizations in order to bear ecological and social responsibility in the long term.[2][1] It is currently looking for pedagogical specialists to expand its range of services.[5]
The Landgräfliche Stiftung combines tradition with contemporary help: from the first orphanage residents to the present day, it creates opportunities for a secure future. It remains a living legacy that strengthens and involves young people.[1][2][3]
