The LAS Art Foundation is a non-profit art institution and platform in Berlin that has been working at the intersection of art, science and new technologies since 2019. Founded by Jan Fischer and Dr. Bettina Kames, it emerged from the "Light Art Space" and has developed into an innovative player in the international art scene.[1][2][3]
The Foundation pursues the ambitious mission of questioning the present and making future scenarios tangible. It positions itself as a new type of art institution that no longer places people at the center, but sees them as part of an interconnected whole. Core values are interdisciplinary exchange, research and curiosity: LAS works with artists, thinkers and institutions worldwide to provide impetus for new ideas. Topics such as , quantum computing, gaming, ecology and biotechnology are the focus - explored through installations, performances and experimental formats.[1][3][4][5]
LAS develops research-based, immersive projects that often take two to three years to create. Artists are given access to experts from technology and science to create works that open up new perspectives. Examples:
The program includes exhibitions in unusual Berlin locations (e.g. Kraftwerk Berlin, Halle am Berghain, former Bilka department store), live performances, educational formats, publications and research projects. Many works tour internationally and are accessible online to appeal to a broad audience - through reduced tickets, free events and a strong digital presence.[1][2][3][6]
Although explicit sustainability goals are not listed in detail, LAS integrates ecological themes centrally into its projects, for example through investigations of biotechnology and ecology. The Foundation creates spaces for interdisciplinary innovations that illuminate social future scenarios and invite a non-specialized audience to experience complex technologies. As an incubator, it promotes partnerships with corporates and institutions to support artistic processes in the long term.[1][3][8]
Under the direction of Carly Whitefield (Program) and a dynamic team, LAS realizes globally unique approaches that use art as a catalyst for technological and scientific discourse. The Foundation thus positions itself as a foundation in Berlin's art landscape - research-intensive, forward-looking and immersive.[2][6][7]
