The Lebenshilfe Herne / Wanne-Eickel e.V. is a dedicated association committed to the full participation of people with disabilities and their families in society. With around 250 members and 350 employees at 14 locations, the association offers comprehensive support so that affected people can live as independently as possible - always individually tailored to personality, needs and severity of the disability.[1][4]
The main mission of the association is: Every person with a disability receives exactly the protection and help they need to lead a fulfilling life. The mission statement serves as a framework and emphasizes values such as individuality, self-determination and community. It describes what is important to the association and is the starting point for all changes. People should be able to .[1][4]
The association is the sole shareholder of Lebenshilfe KIDS gGmbH and Lebenshilfe Herne Selbstbestimmt Wohnen gGmbH, which implement specialized services.[1]
The offer is diverse and needs-oriented, from childhood to old age:
Early intervention and childcare: Interdisciplinary early intervention combines pedagogy and therapies such as special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and psychology - always playful and family-centered. There are six integrative Kitas (e.g. Regenbogenland, Wilde Wiese, Phantasia, Däumling, Löwenzahn, Europagarten) for children with and without disabilities, which prioritize inclusion, exercise, healthy eating and language support.[8][10]
Living and daily structures: Selbstbestimmt Wohnen gGmbH operates four residential facilities for approx. 110 residents as well as outpatient housing offers for 30 users. The Tagesstruktur GlĂĽckauf offers older people with intellectual disabilities (e.g. after leaving the workshop or with dementia) a second environment with cooking, a varied program and individual support - Mondays to Fridays for 24 people.[6]
Further education and advice: Courses at the Paritätische Akademie NRW in barrier-free rooms promote people with intellectual disabilities (topics change every six months). The family support service (FUD) advises on assistance, relief and applications as well as hourly care.[7][9]
All offers aim at participation, preparation for workshops and meaningful daily activities.[1][6]
Explicit sustainability goals are not detailed, but the work embodies long-term social sustainability: Through inclusion, early intervention and lifelong support, barriers are removed and dependencies are minimized. Initiatives such as healthy eating in daycare centers, exercise promotion and community activities (e.g. cooking together) contribute to healthy aging and environmental awareness. The association cooperates with associations and sponsors to secure stable structures.[1][6][10]
The Lebenshilfe Herne stands for Solidarity and Empowerment - a role model for inclusive social design in Herne and Wanne-Eickel. With a focus on people, it unfolds potential and creates opportunities for a self-determined life.[1][4]
