The LINEG – Linksniederrheinische Entwässerungs-Genossenschaft is the central water management association on the Lower Left Rhine and has been ensuring safe, clean and sustainable water management between Krefeld and Xanten for over 100 years.[5][3] In the approximately 620 km² association area with more than 340,000 inhabitants, the LINEG is responsible for wastewater treatment, groundwater protection, the regulation of surface and groundwater and the near-natural development of water bodies.[5][3][6] To this end, it operates, among other things, several sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, measuring points and a central laboratory to permanently monitor and control water quality, water levels and water body development.[3][6]
The core mission of the LINEG is to secure the water management foundations in a landscape shaped by mining: It compensates for mining consequences, regulates the groundwater level in subsidence areas and protects settlement areas from waterlogging and flooding.[3][6][2] As a and , the LINEG does not pursue profit maximization, but rather reconciles .[3][6] The guiding principle "" (Responsibility for the Environment) shapes the work of the more than 300 employees, who guarantee affordable, reliable and ecologically oriented water management.[1][3]
The Mission of the LINEG is a safe, clean, affordable and long-term sustainable water management on the Lower Left Rhine.[1][5] In addition to technical infrastructure, this also includes the ecological development of water bodies: the near-natural character is gradually being restored to developed watercourses in order to promote biodiversity and make the landscape climate-resilient.[6][5]
A special focus is on Klimaschutz und Nachhaltigkeit (Climate protection and sustainability): In 2023, the LINEG was the first water management association in Germany to be accepted into the Verband der Klimaschutz-Unternehmen (Association of Climate Protection Companies) and is working with an EMAS-certified environmental management system to continuously improve its processes.[7][3][9] Through the increased use of erneuerbarer Energien (renewable energies), efficiency improvements in pumping and sewage treatment plants and targeted modernizations, the LINEG has already significantly reduced its CO₂ footprint and saved several thousand tons of CO₂ equivalents.[2][7] Scientific partnerships, for example with RWTH Aachen, support further emission reduction and adaptation to climate change.[7]
With this combination of technical Leistungsfähigkeit (technical performance), gesetzlichem Auftrag (statutory mandate) and ambitionierter Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie (ambitious sustainability strategy), the LINEG is positioning itself as a future-oriented player for Gewässerschutz (water protection), Klimaanpassung (climate adaptation) and a robust blau-grüne Infrastruktur (blue-green infrastructure) on the Lower Left Rhine.[1][5][10]
