Since 1982, MKW GmbH & Co. KG has been a leading partner for waste disposal, recycling and environmental protection in East Frisia as a subsidiary of the Aurich district.[1][2][3] Founded as a compost and waste recycling company and renamed in 2002, the company takes on public-law tasks for efficient waste treatment throughout the district.[3][4]
In the ultra-modern Großefehn disposal center, MKW processes organic waste into high-quality products: compost, liquid fertilizer and biogas.[1][2][3][4] A Mechanical-Biological Waste Treatment Plant (MBA) optimizes the processing of residual waste.[1][2] The center includes an organic waste composting plant, a fermentation plant, green waste composting, three combined heat and power plants (525 kWel, 340 kWel, 250 kWel), biogas storage, biofilters, biogas processing and a container drying plant for biomass.[4][6]
MKW organizes the waste collection of organic and residual waste, waste paper, light packaging and waste glass - a special feature is the transport on the car-free islands of Juist and Baltrum by horse-drawn carriage.[2] Several recycling centers on the mainland and islands enable citizens to deliver themselves flexibly.[1][2][3] The range of services is supplemented by waste logistics, acceptance, recycling, disposal, compost production and sales, fee billing and waste consulting.[3][5]
The mission of MKW is: To operate waste management cleanly, reliably and with regional commitment in order to promote a closed material cycle.[2] Core values are efficiency, environmental protection and sustainability. Through continuous investments in plants, a fleet of modern special vehicles and qualified personnel, the company ensures professional, environmentally friendly disposal.[3][5] Topics such as energy generation, climate protection and waste prevention are the focus in order to conserve resources and close cycles.[3]
As a pioneer in the circular economy, MKW extracts renewable energies and fertilizers from waste, reduces landfill volumes and minimizes CO₂ emissions through biogas use in combined heat and power plants.[4] Sustainability initiatives include the production of fresh and finished compost for agricultural cycles and environmental education.[3] The extracurricular learning location in Großefehn offers schools and interested parties insights into waste recycling, promotes knowledge about the correct handling of resources and raises awareness of circular principles.[2][3]
With around 200 employees, MKW is a popular employer and an established training company for specialists in recycling and waste management as well as professional drivers.[3][5] The regional connection is reflected in the adaptation to local needs, such as island services, and makes the company a stable pillar of the East Frisian economy.[1][2]
MKW embodies modern environmental technology: Waste is transformed into recyclables, energy and education - for a sustainable future in the Aurich district.[1][3][4]
