The Medizinische Fakultät der Universität Münster, together with the Universitätsklinikum Münster (UKM), forms a close functional unit that combines excellent patient care, interdisciplinary research and high-quality training. With around 70 institutes, clinics and polyclinics as well as over 2,000 scientists and 3,000 students, it is one of the leading medical centers in Germany.[1][2][3]
The UKM comprises over 40 clinics and polyclinics that offer a wide range of highly specialized care. The main focuses include Innere Medizin (e.g. kidney and hypertension diseases, rheumatology), Chirurgie (general, visceral, transplantation, trauma and neurosurgery), , , as well as . Special expertise can be found in areas such as allergology, dermato-oncology, skin cancer screening and pruritus treatment. The central clinic houses many outpatient facilities, supplemented by specialized centers such as the Skin Tumor Center.[1][4]
The core mission is to understand the human body and disease mechanisms, to develop innovative diagnostic methods and personalized therapies. Values such as Interdisziplinarität, klinische Relevanz and Nachwuchsförderung are at the center: research and teaching are closely linked to practice in order to bring creative ideas directly into care. The faculty cooperates intensively with departments such as biology, physics, chemistry and computer science in order to achieve progress in fields such as cell imaging or medical informatics.[2][3][6]
Over 2,000 experts are driving forward klinische und grundlagenorientierte Forschung, with a focus on immune responses, autoimmune diseases, melanoma biology, neuroinflammation and vascular pathologies. Highlights include the European Institute of Molecular Imaging (EIMI), the Centrum für Reproduktionsmedizin, Institutes for Immunology, Infectiology and Translational Neuroscience. Current projects such as the PROMISE study on prostate cancer or research into male infertility aim to improve prognoses and new therapies. Participation in the Medical Informatics Initiative networks patient data for faster treatments.[3][4][6]
Almost 3,000 students benefit from practical teaching in small groups, modern equipment and innovative formats such as the Studienhospital. Programs such as "Experimental Medicine" promote early research skills, interfaculty doctorates and idea competitions. This trains a new generation of excellent doctors and researchers.[2][5][8]
Explicit sustainability initiatives are not highlighted in detail, but the interdisciplinary focus on evidence-based, patient-centered medicine indirectly contributes to resource-saving care. Equality measures and the promotion of Gender Equality underline inclusive values.[6]
This symbiosis of research, clinic and teaching positions the Medizinische Fakultät and the UKM as an innovation driver for forward-looking medicine.[1][2][3] (approx. 2480 characters)
