The DMB-Mieterverein Stuttgart und Umgebung e.V. is an independent, politically neutral association based in Stuttgart that has been fighting for tenants by tenants for over 125 years.[2][1] As a registered association in the register of associations (VR 2227), it is financed exclusively by membership fees and does not pursue any profit goals - all income is used for statutory purposes.[1][2]
The main mission of the association is to actively protect the interests of its members in rental and housing matters.[1][2] It vigorously advocates for a social housing policy at the municipal, state and federal levels, as well as for a social tenancy law.[1] Core values are independence from the state and parties, solidarity among tenants and the commitment to .[2] The association strengthens the rights of tenants by influencing legislation, administration, the press and public opinion.[1]
With over 30,000 members in Stuttgart and the surrounding area, the tenant association offers comprehensive advice on rental and home ownership issues - especially for members who live in their own homes.[1][9] Activities include lectures, meetings and discussions to impart knowledge and strengthen networks.[1] The association promotes the procurement and preservation of affordable housing and cooperates with other organizations.[1][2]
As a local part of the Deutschen Mieterbunds (DMB), it is networked with 320 other associations and 1.3 million members. This gives it a strong voice in housing policy at the state and federal levels.[2]
The association is practically involved in combating profiteering, unjustified terminations and speculation. Examples: Actions such as the "golden rent slap" award for speculators or participation in rent demos for affordable housing.[7][9] It is calling for more housing construction in Stuttgart - with around 30,000 missing homes - and better controls on excessive rents.[6] It recently appealed to the city to acquire portfolios of large corporations such as Vonovia to secure tenants.[7]
Under Managing Director Ralf Brodda (since September 2024) and Chairman Rolf Gaßmann, the association is represented in the Housing Subcommittee of the Stuttgart City Council.[5][6] Brodda, an experienced lawyer with over 25 years of tenant work, is committed to housing policy reforms.[6] His predecessor Angelika Brautmeier shaped the association for 35 years with a focus on tenant protection.[6]
Sustainability goals revolve around long-term affordable housing: promoting cheap, healthy housing, combating displacement through speculation and vacancy, and putting pressure on municipalities for social responsibility.[1][2][9] The association advocates for cities that prioritize people - not profit.[9] Through political influence and education, it contributes to a fair housing supply that is family-friendly and environmentally friendly.[1]
The association is managed by a general meeting (board and members) and a 7-member board: Chairman, two deputies, secretary and three assessors.[1] The financial year follows the calendar year.[1]
With its long tradition and strong network, the DMB-Mieterverein Stuttgart remains an indispensable partner for tenants in uncertain times - informative, combative and future-oriented.[2][6]
