    As the central specialist authority of the state of Niedersachsen, based in Hannover, the NLGA has been promoting and protecting the health of the population since 1995. It plays a key role in the prevention, monitoring and control of infectious diseases such as influenza, COVID-19 and RSV[1][3], offers travel medicine advice including WHO-licensed yellow fever vaccinations[1] and supports the public health service through further training[2].

    Its core tasks include microbiological and environmental medical examinations, the evaluation of epidemiological data and advising health authorities and medical facilities[2][3]. The NLGA operates an S3 laboratory for highly pathogenic pathogens[1] and coordinates crisis management in the event of a disaster via the Zentrum für Gesundheits- und Infektionsschutz (ZGI)[2].
