Offenbach am Main is the fifth largest city in Hesse with around 133,000 inhabitants and one of the ten central hubs of the state. Located directly on the Main and neighboring Frankfurt am Main, it forms a contiguous settlement area in the vibrant Rhine-Main area.[1][6]
Originally known as a Huguenot-influenced industrial city, Offenbach was a world leader in the leather goods industry. Today, the city has transformed into a modern service center and university location. The Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) promotes strong cluster formation in the design sector, making Offenbach a hotspot for creativity. The resides here, and since 2025, the Meteorological Service department of the Hochschule des Bundes für öffentliche Verwaltung.[1][3]
The city is characterized by the highest proportion of residents with a migration background among German major cities – a sign of its cosmopolitan, multicultural diversity.[1][4]
Offenbach combines history and modernity. The Deutsche Ledermuseum (DLM) presents masterpieces of European leather design from the Middle Ages to the present day, a shoe collection with over 10,000 exhibits from four millennia, as well as ethnographic objects from all over the world.[3] The Klingspor-Museum is dedicated to book art and contemporary literature.[3]
In the heart of the city, the Wilhelmsplatz with its weekly market, street cafes, and the lively Frankfurter Straße with its shops invite you to stroll. On the banks of the Main, the Hafenquartier is emerging around the blue crane as an urban residential and commercial area: creative startups, cool gastronomy, and the "Park in den Dünen" on the Hafeninsel attract young life. Art installations, expanded pedestrian and cycle paths make the harbor a magnet.[3][6]
Icons such as the Büsing-Palais, Schloss Rumpenheim, or the Wetterpark invite you to discover. "Offenbach am Meer" – that's what locals call the relaxed atmosphere by the water.[3][4]
Offenbach is divided into 21 districts, including Innenstadt, Kaiserlei, Rosenhöhe, Rumpenheim, and Waldheim. Formerly independent municipalities such as Bieber, Bürgel, and Rumpenheim were incorporated between 1908 and 1942. Each district has its own administration and unique characteristics – from green oases to urban quarters.[2][5][7]
The city's main mission is to shine as a dynamic location for design, culture, and services: "Wo der Main seinen schönsten Bogen macht, liegt Offenbach. Eine Stadt voller Spannung und auf dem Sprung."[6] Values such as European Integration (European Prize 1956), openness, and creativity shape the image.[1]
Offenbach focuses on urban renewal: the expansion of cycle and footpaths, green projects such as the Park in den Dünen, and sustainable neighborhood development promote quality of life. The proximity to the Regionalverband FrankfurtRheinMain strengthens cooperative initiatives for a green, inclusive metropolis.[1][3]
Offenbach am Main is more than just a neighboring city of Frankfurt – it is a creative melting pot that masterfully combines tradition and innovation. A place that invites you to discover and stay.[1][3][6]
