The Plattform Lernende Systeme promotes interdisciplinary dialogue on Artificial Intelligence in Germany. It brings together experts from science, business, and society to develop responsible AI applications and improve quality of life and sustainability.
The Plattform Lernende Systeme is a nationwide network of experts from the fields of science, business, and society that deals with the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Founded in 2017 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and acatech – German Academy of Science and Engineering e.V., the platform aims to position Germany internationally as a technology leader for Learning Systems.
The main mission of the Plattform Lernende Systeme is to promote interdisciplinary scientific exchange and societal dialogue on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. It consolidates the expertise of about 200 members to develop options for action and recommendations for the responsible use of Learning Systems. As an independent broker, the platform fosters dialogue between science, business, society, and politics to shape technology in the interest of people and society[1][3][5].
Working Groups and Steering Committee: The platform is organized into seven interdisciplinary working groups and a steering committee. These working groups cover topics such as Technological Enablers and Data Science, Work/Qualification and Human-Machine Interaction, IT Security, Privacy, Law and Ethics, Innovation and Business Models, Mobility and Intelligent Transport Systems, Health and Medicine, as well as Learning Robotic Systems[1][4][5].
Publications and Application Scenarios: The platform regularly publishes analyses and recommendations in the form of publicly accessible publications, such as white papers, and presents application scenarios to illustrate the use of AI[1][3].
Public Events and Dialogue: Through regular conferences and events, the platform invites public dialogue and provides overview information on AI applications, research institutions, and degree programs. Its AI map visualizes this information nationwide[1][3].
The Plattform Lernende Systeme is committed to the sustainable and responsible design of Learning Systems. Its goals include:
The work of the Plattform Lernende Systeme is coordinated by an office located at acatech. The steering committee, led by Federal Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger and acatech President Johann-Dietrich Wörner, decides on the strategic and content direction of the platform[1][5].
Thus, the Plattform Lernende Systeme is a central actor in the public opinion-forming process on Artificial Intelligence in Germany, promoting the responsible use of AI through interdisciplinary collaboration and science-based policy and societal consulting.
