The Quäker Nachbarschaftsheim e.V. is an established socio-cultural center in Cologne, founded in 1947 as a municipal and state-recognized community center and provider of independent youth welfare services. Deeply rooted in the Innenstadt and Ehrenfeld districts, it offers a wide range of services for children, young people, adults and senior citizens that are based on people's living environments and promote social balance.[1][2]
The center covers a broad spectrum:
In addition, the center rents out multifunctional rooms - from a 172 m² hall with 120 seats to sports rooms and a bowling alley - ideal for cultural events.[6] As part of the Kölner Elf (association of 14 community centers), it is committed to the visibility of such initiatives.[2]
The main mission is: To provide necessary social work, even without a legal mandate, oriented towards local needs. Values such as fairness, openness and conflict resolution shape everyday life: conflicts are addressed, compromises are worked out, problems are seen as opportunities. Civic engagement is at the center - people of all ages volunteer, promoting "help for self-help".[1]
As an ideologically and politically independent association (founded in 1948) with a support association since 1996, it focuses on inclusion: visitors are involved, new things are tried out.[1][2]
Sustainability is reflected in nature-based projects, such as the expansion of the Kita's outdoor area with €9,000 in funding from the NRW-Stiftung, to offer children sensory experiences in nature.[2] The work emphasizes resource-saving, life-world-oriented approaches, e.g. through planting campaigns and thematic mottos such as "Spring" with seed bags.[5] As a non-profit institution (tax-exempt), a foundation secures additional projects and staff.[3][7]
The Quäker Nachbarschaftsheim remains a lively meeting place that strengthens social cohesion - from the Kita to civic engagement.[1][2]
