The Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) is a unique, non-profit organization that consists of a collaboration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and transmission system operators (TSOs) from across Europe. Founded in 2009, the RGI is based in Berlin, Germany, and works closely with partners from various European countries[2][4].
The main mission of the RGI is to promote transparent, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable grid developments to support the further expansion of renewable energies and the energy transition in Europe. The RGI advocates for fair, transparent, and sustainable grid development to achieve decarbonization goals in line with the Paris Climate Agreement[2][4].
The RGI is strongly committed to promoting sustainable energy policies. These include:
The RGI is funded through membership fees, operational grants from the EU-LIFE program, as well as by the Mercator Foundation and the European Climate Foundation. The organization has a clear governance structure, where all partners have equal voting rights and the Members’ Assembly (MA) serves as the highest decision-making body[2][4].
The Renewables Grid Initiative is a shining example of a successful collaboration between NGOs and TSOs working together for a sustainable and future-proof energy supply in Europe.
