The Universitätsallianz Ruhr (UA Ruhr) is an association of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the TU Dortmund and the Universität Duisburg-Essen. With approximately 120,000 students, an annual budget of 1.2 billion euros and ultra-modern research facilities, the UA Ruhr is one of the largest and most innovative research locations in Germany[1][3].
The alliance focuses on bundling the expertise of the individual universities in order to create overarching research strongholds, share infrastructure and establish joint research platforms. The aim is to promote the Ruhr area as a region of research and training excellence. The UA Ruhr emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and has established academic liaison offices in North America, Latin America and Russia[1][3].
The UA Ruhr is strongly committed to sustainability by participating in projects such as "Greening the UN Missions" and advocating for environmentally friendly practices[1]. In addition, the alliance contributes to the transformation of the Ruhr area from a former coal and steel location to a center for energy and engineering sciences, materials sciences and logistics[1]. It also promotes international collaboration through programs such as the Ruhr Fellowship to network students and researchers[1].
