The
The Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart (HMDK Stuttgart) is the largest and oldest university of music and performing arts in Baden-Württemberg with a tradition since 1857. With around 900 students and over 300 teachers, it offers a comprehensive range of 37 degree programs in the fields of music, performing arts, music education and music theory. Of particular note is the Bachelor's degree program in Figurentheater, which is unique in Germany. The university is divided into four faculties, which cover, among other things, instrumental and vocal training, composition, Jazz & Pop and performing arts[1][3][4].
The HMDK Stuttgart pursues a mission that combines artistic excellence with practical and interdisciplinary training. It attaches great importance to a creative and innovative learning environment that unites artistic freedom and social responsibility. The CAMPUS GEGENWART concept also emphasizes the promotion of contemporary artistic practices and transdisciplinary collaboration, allowing students from different disciplines to benefit from each other[3].
The university is not only a training center, but also a cultural venue with around 450 public concerts and around 100 theater and dance events each year, attracting over 85,000 visitors. These include concert events in several halls as well as in the historic own theater building from 1840[3][4].
Sustainability is an integral part of teaching and research at the HMDK Stuttgart. The university is involved in future-oriented projects that combine social and ecological responsibility, for example within the framework of CAMPUS GEGENWART, which artistically explores and discusses current social challenges and sustainability issues[3].
The striking, architecturally distinctive university building in the center of Stuttgart with its 50-meter-high tower – the "Tower of a Thousand Sounds" – symbolizes the close connection between tradition and modernity. The HMDK Stuttgart is therefore an important institution that combines artistic training, research and public cultural mediation at a high level and offers students the best conditions for an international career in music and performing arts.
