Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
The
Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
As one of the most important art museums in Germany, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart combines 800 years of art history in an architecturally unique ensemble of old building, Stirling building and Steib halls. With over 12,000 m² of exhibition space, it presents masterpieces from the High Middle Ages to the present, including highlights such as Matisse's "Back Nudes", Picasso's sculpture group "The Bathers" and the Beuys Room personally designed by Joseph Beuys[1][4].
Core competencies
The collection includes Swabian panel painting, graphics from the 15th–21st centuries, works of Classicism and Classical Modernism (1900–1980) as well as contemporary positions. A special focus is on interdisciplinary projects such as "KunstKraftWerke", which promote inclusion through participatory art education[Zusatzinfos].
Mission
Through education, research and social dialogue, the Staatsgalerie makes art an experience as a medium for global issues such as war, ecology and the future. Current collaborations, such as with the FaBiS family center, show how art can be used to process refugee experiences[Zusatzinfos].
Architectural heritage
The classicist founding building (1843) by Gottlob Georg Barth, the postmodern-refreshing Stirling-Bau (1984) and the Steib-Hallen (2002) form an architectural history lesson that symbolically unites tradition and modernity[1][5].
Current Initiatives
– International Networking: The directorate presents inclusion projects such as "KunstKraftWerke" globally, e.g. at the #museumsummit in Hong Kong[Zusatzinfos].
– Participatory formats: The #Bitchfest and workshops with young people strengthen artistic empowerment strategies[Zusatzinfos].
– Research: In the joint project F4DIA, the house develops needs-based workshop modules for interdisciplinary thinking in cultural institutions[3].
As a dynamic place of encounter, the Staatsgalerie relies on a mix of collection shows, temporary exhibitions and participatory formats that position art as a catalyst for social debates.
