Der Städtetag Baden-Württemberg is the central municipal state association, which since its founding on May 10, 1954 in Baden-Baden has represented the interests of 206 member cities and other partners. With a long tradition dating back to the 1870s, it speaks for around 6.9 million residents and acts as a strong voice of the cities towards the state, the federal government and the European Union.[1][2][5][6]
Founded as a modern association after predecessors such as the city committee of 1873 and a Baden city association for larger cities, the Städtetag has developed into a registered association under private law. It is the state association of the German Association of Cities and divides its into three groups: (large cities like Stuttgart), (cities with over 15,000 inhabitants) and (smaller towns). Other members include the Kommunalverband für Jugend und Soziales (KVJS), badenova AG & Co. KG, insurance associations such as BGV and WGV, as well as VKU, VDV and Komm.ONE.[1][3][4][5]
The bodies – Hauptversammlung as the highest body, Vorstand with 18 representatives and Geschäftsführendes Vorstandsmitglied Ralf Broß (since 2022, deputy Dr. Susanne Nusser) – steer the work. They are supported by seven Fachausschüssen, over 40 Arbeitsgemeinschaften and representations in around 120 Gremien. 36 full-time employees work in departments such as finance, environment and digitalization at the Stuttgart office.[3][4]
As a Kompetenzkoppler, Lautgeber, Lösungsfinder, Politikdesigner, Wissensflüsterer und Zukunftsmacher, the Städtetag fulfills its constitutional mandate under Art. 71 Para. 4 of the State Constitution: It hears cities in legislative procedures and represents them to politics, associations and the EU. Important Dienstleistungen include:
Under the motto „Stadt. Land. Stark.“, the association promotes local self-government as a motivating force for innovative solutions.[3][5]
The Hauptmission is to strengthen cities as vibrant centers: The Städtetag pools expertise, creates networks and shapes policy. It positions itself as a Kompetenznetzwerk that exchanges experiences, shares knowledge and acts in a forward-looking manner – always practical and city-related. Values such as Selbstverwaltung, Zusammenarbeit and Zukunftsfähigkeit characterize the association, which sees cities as an engine for progress.[3][5][7]
Sustainability is firmly anchored in the Umwelt- und Naturschutz department. The Städtetag advises on climate protection, resource conservation and green infrastructure in working groups. Initiatives include the exchange on renewable energies (e.g. via badenova), biodiversity and resilient urban planning. As an EU presence in Brussels, it influences funding for green transformations and supports cities in achieving goals such as CO₂ reduction and the circular economy. Practical examples are created in Fachausschüssen, which develop recommendations for sustainable municipal policy.[3]
The Städtetag Baden-Württemberg remains dynamic: From digitalization to citizen participation, it drives cities forward and secures their prosperity in a changing world. (2487 characters including spaces)
