The Stiftung Naturschutzfonds Baden-Württemberg is a legally capable foundation under public law that has been active since 1976 on the basis of the Naturschutzgesetz Baden-Württemberg (Baden-Württemberg Nature Conservation Act). For more than 45 years, it has been committed to preserving the natural environment, the foundations of life and biological diversity in the state.[2][1][3]
Under the motto "Wir fördern Vielfalt" (We promote diversity), the foundation creates perspectives for nature and people. It initiates positive developments in nature conservation, paves new paths and supports exemplary, innovative and creative projects. Core values are the preservation of the diverse cultural landscape, the strengthening of and raising public awareness of sustainable development.[2][5][1] As a grant-making foundation, it helps organizations, associations, companies, municipal bodies and private individuals to turn ideas into concrete actions.[6][3]
The foundation supports projects in central areas such as species protection, biotope networking, environmental education and sustainable landscape management. Examples include the creation of 50 new ponds for the highly endangered European tree frog, natural garden competitions against harmful gravel gardens, and measures for wild bees, wasps and the stag beetle. It uses Ersatzzahlungen (compensatory payments) (e.g. around 2.5 million euros annually) for interventions in nature and landscape, which flow into practical nature conservation measures.[8][6][1] In addition, it awards the Landesnaturschutzpreis (State Nature Conservation Award) (endowed with 30,000 euros) every two years, which recognizes pioneering achievements and honors exemplary character, commitment and professional competence.[3]
The Stiftungsrat (Foundation Board), which is voluntary and appointed by the Ministry of the Environment, manages the foundation. The chairwoman is Thekla Walker, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management. The council includes representatives from the state parliament, ministries, regional councils, nature conservation associations, business, agriculture, forestry and more - a broad spectrum of society as a whole.[4][7] The management is the responsibility of Stephanie Rebsch (Managing Director) and Michael Kretzschmar (Deputy).[4] The foundation is assigned to the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy Management and is financed, among other things, by Ersatzzahlungen (compensatory payments).[2][4]
The foundation prioritizes the strengthening of biological diversity and the improvement of living conditions for animal and plant species. It supports pilot and model projects with high innovative strength, promotes education on biological diversity and raises awareness of ecological challenges. Its own initiatives complement partner funding, such as land agencies or specific species protection measures. In this way, it makes a significant contribution to the Naturschutzstrategie Baden-Württembergs (Baden-Württemberg Nature Conservation Strategy) and makes nature conservation accessible to all.[5][6][9] Its modern website based on TYPO3 with barrier-free features and interactive elements improves transparency and communication.[1]
Thanks to its many years of expertise, the foundation is a central partner in nature conservation in Baden-Württemberg, which not only protects diversity, but actively promotes it and sets new impulses.[1][2][3]
