The phanTECHNIKUM looks back on a long tradition: Under the name "Polytechnic Museum" it was founded in 1961 and developed between 1961 and 1994 into one of the most popular destinations in Schwerin.[10] The exhibition in the orangery of the castle was considered one of the few museum facilities for technology and production in the GDR and thus contributed significantly to the communication of technical knowledge.[10]
The museum sees itself as a family-friendly institution and offers extensive visitor information as well as barrier-free access, including disabled parking spaces.[3] The central location with good public transport connections makes the phanTECHNIKUM an easily accessible destination for individual visitors, families and school groups.[3]
The museum is supported by various sponsorships and financial support, which contribute to the exhibition design and restoration of objects.[5] These partnerships enable the institution to continuously improve and expand its offerings.
The phanTECHNIKUM is therefore more than just a museum – it is a learning place where the history of technology comes alive and visitors can directly experience the innovative power of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region.
