The Tierheim Elmshorn, operated by Tierschutzverein Elmshorn und Umgebung e.V., is the only animal shelter in the Pinneberg district. As a registered, non-profit association, the association has been committed to animal welfare in the region for decades and is a member of the German Animal Welfare Federation.[1][2][5]
The association takes in abandoned, mistreated or needy animals and offers them a safe haven. In 2022, they helped 167 dogs, 407 cats and 224 small animals – an impressive number that underscores the team's immense work.[3] In addition to accommodation and care, the focus is on placing them in caring new families. Here, the employees attach great importance to personal advice, trial walks and play hours to ensure that the animal and adopters are a perfect match.[4][7] This creates long-term, happy partnerships that avoid failures.
The main mission of the Tierschutzverein Elmshorn is: To guarantee the protection of all animals in the Pinneberg district.[1][5] The association works purely privately and on a voluntary basis, driven by a passion for animals and the tireless commitment of its members. Values such as responsibility, empathy and professionalism shape everyday life: Every admission is carefully checked, medical care is a priority, and the animals receive not only food and protection, but also emotional support. The current leadership team with 1st Chairwoman Susanne Kehrhahn-Eyrich, 2nd Chairwoman Anja Henkelmann and Treasurer Ann-Christin Rathjen ensures continuous further development.[3][6]
The Tierheim Elmshorn goes beyond pure animal welfare and raises public awareness of animal welfare issues. Through donation appeals, information materials and events such as on their website, the association promotes awareness of responsible animal keeping.[4] Sustainability goals include promoting neutering and educational work to reduce overbreeding and abandonment – in the long term for fewer admissions and more well-being for animals.[5] As a non-profit organization, the association is financed exclusively by donations, membership fees and supporters, which underlines its transparency and independence.[2]
In a time when many animals are suffering, the Tierheim Elmshorn is a beacon of compassion. It combines professional structures with heartfelt dedication and has given thousands of animals a new life. Whether as a potential sponsor, volunteer or adopter: Everyone can become part of this important mission. The website invites you to discover more – from current residents to support offers.[4]
