The Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt (ubs for short) are a dynamic single-genre theater for drama and musical theater with an extended guest performance program, which is funded as an independent municipal company of the city of Schwedt/Oder by the state of Brandenburg, the city of Schwedt/Oder and the Uckermark district. Since 2017, they have been one of the two Brandenburg State Theaters and serve as a vibrant cultural center for the entire Uckermark region.[1][3][4][6]
The roots go back to the 18th century: In 1773/74, Margrave Friedrich Wilhelm had the orangery converted into the Schwedt court theater with 400 seats – one of the first permanent theater buildings in Germany. After reunification, the municipal theater merged with the Kulturhaus in 1990 to form ubs, a unique model that combines theatrical art and cultural diversity.[1]
ubs independently produces productions in drama, musical theater and musicals, supplemented by its own children's and youth theater program. The guest performance program includes national and international concerts, shows, cabaret, readings and events. Multi-talented ensemble members cross the boundaries of classic theater formats; workshops for tailoring, make-up and props work independently.[1][2][3][4]
Two modern venues characterize the house:
The program appeals to all age and interest groups, including offers for clubs, companies and the public – even the city council meets in the foyer.[4]
As a regional cultural center, ubs sees itself as an integral part of social life in the Uckermark. The mission is: to combine high artistic quality with broad accessibility, to overcome boundaries and to culturally revitalize the region. Values such as diversity, innovation and inclusion are at the center – the house is barrier-free and maintains close cross-border cooperation.[1][4][6]
The theater network viaTEATRI intensifies ties with neighboring Poland: Selected plays are performed bilingually or with subtitles, brochures are published in Polish. Current productions such as "Every Heart is Built Around a Memory" or "Die Legende von Paul und Paula" underline this innovative spirit.[3][4]
Under artistic director André Nicke, who brings a breath of fresh air, courageous productions are created that illuminate topics such as identity and society.[3][7]
ubs is strongly committed to digitalization and sustainability. Since 2020, a full-time digitalization officer has been driving projects forward with ERDF funds (European Regional Development Fund): New servers for data security, 3D visualizations of stage sets, digital textbooks and smart advertising spaces optimize processes and reduce resource consumption. This digital strategy ensures future viability and efficient transformation in a digital world.[5]
In addition, the house promotes regional networking and inclusion as a contribution to sustainable cultural life – without compromising on quality.[2][5]
With around 120,000 visitors annually (as of 2018), ubs remains a cultural magnet in the region: tradition meets modernity, local connects with global. Whether exciting premieres, concerts or youth-oriented formats – the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt invite you to open your hearts and experience stories.[2][4]
