The Unfallkasse Berlin is the carrier of statutory accident insurance for the state of Berlin and insures over 1.4 million people. This includes employees of the state of Berlin, students, pupils and children in daycare facilities, trainees, employees in private households and volunteers. As a public corporation with self-administration, the Unfallkasse Berlin pursues the goal of preventing accidents in the workplace, at school and on the associated routes, and of preventing occupational diseases and work-related health hazards.
The Unfallkasse Berlin offers comprehensive services relating to statutory accident insurance. These include medical, occupational and social rehabilitation after work accidents or occupational diseases, as well as financial security and compensation for those affected and their relatives. The insurance is free of charge for the insured and is financed exclusively by the employers and the state of Berlin. A particular advantage for companies is the exemption from liability: The Unfallkasse Berlin assumes liability for health damage resulting from insured events, thereby avoiding legal disputes within the companies.
The Unfallkasse Berlin is organized into five departments: Rehabilitation and Benefits, Prevention, Administration, Law and Fundamental Issues, and Information Technology. The self-administration consists of the Assembly of Representatives and the Executive Board, which are made up of employers and employees on an equal basis. These bodies decide on autonomous law, the statutes, accident prevention regulations and the budget. The management, consisting of the Director and Deputy Director, manages the ongoing administrative business and represents the Unfallkasse Berlin externally.
