The Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (WSA NOK) is a German federal authority responsible for the supervision and maintenance of the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (NOK) – the world's busiest artificial sea shipping route.[1][2] As part of the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverwaltung (WSV), it is subordinate to the Generaldirektion Wasserstraßen und Schifffahrt (GDWS) and the Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr.[1]
The WSA NOK ensures the continuous maintenance, safety and efficiency of the 98.6 kilometer long canal, which connects the North Sea near Brunsbüttel with the Baltic Sea near Kiel-Holtenau.[2] Around pass through the canal annually, transporting approximately , saving a detour of 450 kilometers around Skagen and shortening the passage to 6 to 8 hours.[2][4] Core services include:
With 760 employees (as of 2021, organizational chart updated 2025), the office is divided into specialist areas such as Administration, Waterways and Shipping, Mechanical Engineering and Maritime Traffic Technology.[1][5]
The guiding principle is: "Enable mobility and protect the environment!"[2] The WSA NOK not only connects seas, but also strengthens the regional economy and the trans-European transport network through time-saving routes.[2][4] As an indispensable economic factor, it promotes efficient freight transport (e.g. with increasingly larger ships) and supports port management in Schleswig-Holstein.[4]
Sustainability is at the center: The canal reduces fuel consumption and emissions through shorter routes.[3] Ongoing projects optimize operations:
| Initiative | Description | Goal | |------------|-------------|------| | SchleusenNOK40 | Intelligent lock management with data analysis and algorithms (cooperation with dbh Logistics IT and Fraunhofer FOKUS).[3] | Increased safety, efficiency and ease of shipping. | | Expansion and Renovation | New construction of the 5th lock chamber Brunsbüttel, renovation Kiel-Holtenau, deepening, curve optimization east section, traffic flow optimization.[4] | Long-term capacity increase for larger ships and increasing transport volumes. | | Instructions | In the event of limited lock capacity for smooth operation.[7] | High availability despite challenges. |
These measures secure the NOK as a high-performance, environmentally friendly transport route and contribute to economic growth – despite fluctuations (peak in 2008: 105.9 million tons).[4]
The WSA NOK is therefore the gateway to efficient shipping between the North and Baltic Seas, linking economic areas and investing in a future-proof manner.[2]
